Medical Cannabis is Approved in Massachusetts

The Massachusetts State Medical Marijuana Program has approved the use of cannabis for patients with the following severe, debilitating or life-threatening conditions:

• Cancer
• Glaucoma
• HIV or AIDs
• Hepatitis C
• ALS
• Parkinson’s Disease
• Crohn’s Disease
• MS
• Anxiety
• Other debilitating conditions as determined by a
qualifying patient’s healthcare provider

STEPS TO CERTIFICATION

Four easy requirements for physicians and certified nurse practitioners:

STEP 1

PROVIDER EDUCATION

Complete at least 2.0 Category 1 Continuing Professional Development Credits in a program related to proper use of marijuana

STEP 2

REGISTER
WITH THE STATE

Call the Medical Use of Marijuana Program at (617) 660-5370 to request the paperwork required to register with Virtual Gateway. Have your Board of Registration in Medicine or Board of Registration in Nursing and MCSR numbers ready. Complete the Virtual Gateway registration forms, and register with the MMJ Online System.

 

STEP 3

REGISTER
THE PATIENT

• Conduct clinical visits
• Access the Medical Marijuana Online Program (MMJ)
• Ability to register and certify Patients in the same day

STEP 4

PATIENT
RE-CERTIFICATION

• Re-certify the patient beginning 30 days before certificate expiration
• Update usage and recommendations

Important notice for providers: A certification can only be made in the course of a bona fide healthcare provider-patient relationship. A bona fide healthcare provider-patient relationship is defined in the Regulations as a relationship between a certifying healthcare provider (acting in the usual course of professional practice) and a patient, in which the healthcare provider has conducted a clinical visit, completed and documented a full assessment of the patient’s medical history and current medical condition, has explained the potential risks and benefits of the marijuana use, and has a role in the patient’s ongoing care and treatment.
